"Words Hurt"

As she walked down the stairs, she heard low murmurs behind her. She knew they were talking. They all talk, but they don’t understand. They all make fun of her because of her weight, but they don’t know the story behind it.

She gained twenty pounds over a very long and stressful summer. Her parents got divorced and her boyfriend broke up with her the same night her sister was arrested for drinking. She couldn’t confide in anyone, so she relied on the food to comfort her. Usually and athletic person, she sat in front of the television shoving handfuls of junk food into her mouth. She tried to stop this habit, but she would become depressed without the food.

When she went back to school, no one recognized her. She was twenty pounds heavier, and three pant sizes bigger. The moment her friends saw her, they abandoned her, and wanted nothing to do with her. She heard rude comments all day long. And every night she would go home, lock herself in her room, and cry for hours straight.

Unfortunately, the bullying didn’t stop there. In the halls, obnoxious teenage boys would knock her books down, and laugh at her when she bent down to pick them up. She tried out for soccer, thinking she could get into shape again, but she didn’t make the team. People would constantly talk extremely loud when she was near. They would make fat jokes when she was around. She felt the kids enjoyed torturing her, she couldn’t stand it anymore.

She talked to her parents, who talked to the guidance counselor. The counselor tried to set up a program against bullying, but it never followed through. And the bullying kept going. She had no friends, only enemies. People would knock her down and throw her papers everywhere. Even the observers did nothing to help. They just stood there and laughed so that they wouldn’t be picked on.

She still relied on food. The bullying only made it worse, and she kept gaining weight. Her mom finally realized that her daughter was in danger. After many talks, they decided to move to a new district and start over. During the next summer, she lost weight and started over at new school. However, she was still scared for life. Her peers were so cruel that it forced her to move. She will never forget the pain she went through.
