"The Hardest Obstacle of All"

On a playground, kids usually fall, scrape a knee, or hurt themselves, but did you know every seven minutes a child gets bullied? However, the sad part is 85% of the time no one does anything to help. Did you ever have to come to school in fear of getting hurt on a daily basis? Well, 30% of the U.S. students in grades 6th through 10th have reported moderate to frequent involvement in bullying, either as the bully, victim, or both. Something needs to be done to keep U.S. private and public schools safe and free of violence. Bullying needs to be stopped, because it is becoming a hobby for kids in everyday life.

Bullying is not a cool thing. Kids that get bullied are more prone to become a bully, or have a hard life. When kids bully, it really hurts the victim more than it seems. Some kids can take teasing, but usually it pecks at a kid’s heart until they feel as if they can’t go on anymore. This is one reason why every 18 minutes in the U.S., a kid dies from suicide. Some people wonder why kids bring guns to school, and why they shoot anyone in the way. The truth is these kids take their anger out in their peers. These kids are really hurting inside. When they shoot, they really don’t care who they kill. They just want revenge. They want someone to feel like they did when they were bullied. Therefore, they result to violence. I believe if something were done about bullying, the rate of violence in public and private schools would decrease. What could we do? How can we stop these cruel kids from ruining innocent kid’s lives?

Nearly every school has a teacher “on duty” when kids are at recess or lunch. This is a helpful solution to stop bullying. However, I have noticed that some teachers “on duty” don’t pay attention. They are doing other work or grading papers, and frequently don’t look up. Sometimes, things happen, and the teachers don’t see them because they’re looking down. I have noticed only two problems with this solution, the one I have just stated above, and the situation of not having enough teachers “on duty”. The teachers have a lot of area to watch. It is nearly impossible to keep your eyes wide open if you have to watch all around you. Schools need to increase the number of teachers “on duty”. This would make it a lot easier on the teachers, and it would make our schools a safer place. Sometimes, all a bully really wants is a friend, but he doesn’t know how to make one. In a bully’s mind, all he’s doing is “making friends”. So, sometimes becoming a bully’s friend may make the bully stop his cruelty immediately. I believe the only way schools can stop bullying is by increasing the amount of teachers “on duty” in the hallway, cafeteria, gym, and outside, or they can try to help by talking about bully prevention on a daily basis. All of these things can help, and can keep all of our schools safe.

Bullies shouldn’t have to be a thing to be scared of, and kids shouldn’t have to live their lives in fear. Sometimes, life brings obstacles in many sizes, but bullying shouldn’t have to be one of those obstacles you can’t face. To stop bullying in public and private schools will not be an easy task, but in the long run it will be worth it. If you ever get a chance to confront a bully, or help a bully’s victim, do it. Don’t just stand there. Remember, one can make a huge difference, doesn’t 1+1=2?
