When I was in fifth grade there was a boy
on my bus named Billy. Billy wasnt one of the most popular
kids in my school. People were always making fun of him and
throwing stuff at him during class. For some reason the teachers
didnt really do anything about it. They just let it
happen and pretended that it wasnt actually going on.
One day we were sitting at lunch. All of
a sudden the nurse rushed into the cafeteria and I saw Billy
lying on the floor. He wasnt moving. Then the ambulance
showed up. They took Billy and brought him to the hospital.
While all this was going on there was a table of boys laughing
hysterically at all of this. I had no idea what was going
on. Later on that day some of the boys from the table that
was laughing got called down the office one by one. Still
no one knew what was going on.
At the end of the day my teacher told our
class what had happened. Some boys found out that Billy was
allergic to peanuts and while he wasnt looking they
put peanuts in his sandwich. Billy had to be rushed to the
hospital because his allergic reaction was so bad that his
throat closed up and he couldnt breath. I felt horrible
for Billy. Even though I never took the time to get to know
Billy I made him a card and brought it to the hospital. I
have to admit there were times when I did join in with the
other kids and make fun of Billy. Since the peanut incident
I never ever made mean comments to Billy ever again.
Billy ended up switching out of our school.
His parents didnt think that it was a good idea to keep
him at this elementary school any longer. I felt really bad
knowing that my school was so mean to him that he ended up
switching out of our school. If I had known how hurt Billy
was actually feeling I probably would have taken the time
to get to know him better. I have learned to treat everyone
nicely, even if they are a little bit unique or different,
because you never know how horrible you can actually make
someone feel.
