Shiny instruments lay strewn about the carpeted
floor in the GHS band room. Noise engulfed the room, filled
with the taunting shouts of the band members. In the middle
of the room stood a shrimpy looking freshman with thick glasses
complete with heavy rims. In a minute he was off again, chasing
the bully who now held his tattered band music. The students
chanted awful things, urging him to
go run and get it. Seeing as he was not exactly the quickest
person, everyone already knew that he had no hope. But never
the less, he kept running.
Discreetly while the poor boy was on the
run, a chair was placed in the middle of his path. The chair
just sat there asking to be tripped over. At a high rate of
speed, the boy charged over the chair, and at the last moment
tripped over the leg, and flew off onto the floor. For a moment,
he just lay there sprawled in a heap, helpless, and unable
to defend him. All around him, the laughter echoed about.
The ridicule began to subside, when a voice spoke out amongst
the laughter.
"Guys, why'd you do that, just leave
him alone." said the assertive voice.
"What, do you like love him or something?" Jimmy
chanted.
"Ooooooh, you love Curtis." The class moaned.
"No, i's just not right, and if y'all don't know that,
then..."
She was interrupted mid sentence by the
band teacher who was urging students back to their seats.
As students were filing back to their seats, one lone student
separated themselves from the group, and helped him up. Even
though I witnessed a person being severely bullied, I made
no attempt to dissuade them, and to this day, I feel guilty.
Thank goodness for the other students who did. This relates
to the Kitty Genovese theory because, since there was a group
of students surrounding him, they all thought "Oh, someone
else will stop it." But, now we know that usually, people
won't, and the best thing to do is stand up for the person.
Afterwards you'll feel great, and know you did the right thing.
