12-year-old female, Cleveland Middle School, Cleveland, Tennessee
"One of my friends looks like she is from Afghanistan and people don't
like to sit around her and I'm usually the only one who does. Because
to me, it doesn't matter what color or religion you are. If you're
my friend, that's it, no questions asked."
13-year-old female student, Hillside Middle School, Simi Valley,
California
"Some people of Middle Eastern decent or the Muslim
faith are being persecuted by other students just because of the
background of those who committed the acts of terrorism."
14-year-old female student, Field Middle School, Northbrook,
Illinois
"Well, I was being called names because I'm Muslim
and it hurt. Some so-called friends ditched me."
11-year-old female student, R Max Abbot Middle School, Fayetteville,
North Carolina
"Well, I guess you could say that they are being treated differently
in one or two ways. Some people might call them names or make fun
of their religion. Like if a Muslim wears a cloth around their head,
people might make fun of that even though the cloth is important
to their religion. Or let's say a Pakistan person told someone that
couldn't eat meat when they were offered meat a restaurant (or some
place like that) and then someone made fun of them. This is how
some people make fun of certain people."
14-year-old female student, Princeville Grade School, Princeville,
Illinois "The students are trying to get along better now,
and we have learned about being peaceful. We banned together in
the time of need. Our student council organized a money collection
for the very next day. Everyone pitched in. Now, we all understand
each person is important to the country and our lives, even if we
don't recognize it."
12-year-old female student, Broadmoor Middle School, Baton
Rouge, Louisiana "My best friend is from Pakistan … and everyday
when I walk through the halls with her I have to deal with people,
ignorant people, telling her stuff like," Tell your dad Osama bin
Laden thank you, so now we can bomb your country," and "I am going
to come over to your house and kill your dad Osama bin Laden," and
ask her, "Is your dad Osama bin Laden?" I mean it is horrible and
she tells me that she just ignores them but I know that deep inside
it hurts her and it hurts me just as much to watch and listen to
her go through all of that."
