"We are given words of wisdom every day during the media announcements
which tell about these qualities and how they should affect our lives.
We also have a list of good character traits in our agenda that give
a detailed description of what these personality aspects are and how
they help us."
13-year-old male student, Carl Sandburg Middle School, Levittown,
Pennsylvania
"We are told from the start violence is not the answer. We all have
the ability to go to a teacher or guidance counselor and get help.
They all say kind words and over the years they try to teach us
all those things on the list even though I didn't check them all
off. We do activities where we work with others even if we don't
really like that person that much and if you want to get the A+
then you have to work together and use self-control, tolerance,
cooperation, patience and responsibility."
11-year-old female student, Pikeville Elementary, Pikeville,
Kentucky
"The school counselor talks to ALL of the students. Also our school
has a program called "second step." It's where you learn how to
control yourself in situations where you feel like raising your
hand in anger when you really don't have to."
14-year-old female student, Discovery Middle School, Madison,
Alabama
"Our school is BIG on respect. We are taught to respect teachers,
and our fellow students, no matter what the situation is. Self-control
is another thing we are taught. If you can't get a grip on your
feeling or anger, there's nothing stopping you from getting in to
a fight. Anybody can step into a fight and hit somebody, but it
takes REAL COURAGE to walk away from it."
11-year-old male student, Park Middle School, Kennewick, Washington
"They teach you cooperation for making you work with others who
are different from you in groups. They teach you responsibility
for you have to turn in work on time and not be late too many times
and come to school. You are responsible for your grades and attitude.
They teach you tolerance because no matter how mad they make you,
you always have to be respectful to them. You also have to have
self control to control yourself from getting into trouble."
15-year-old female student, Abington Junior High School, Abington,
Pennsylvania
"At this level in school, we are starting to have to be all these
things. Our teachers are beginning to trust us more and more and
build a stronger relationship, to have this relationship we must
give all these things. Also, in school, we are having much more
discussions, which leads to having more self-control, patience,
and to respect and be kind about everyone's opinion. I am also seeing
that teachers have to be all of these things because they are constantly
hearing opinions that they might not agree with, complaining, and
disrespect."
