What does your school do to prevent bullying and violence?

13-year-old female student, Hillside Middle School, Simi Valley, California
"There is a group called "P.A.L.S", which stands for Peer Assistance Leadership Students. They have made a pledge that we have to recite every day, just like the Pledge of Allegiance. It goes, "I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others." Also, people who fight are suspended."

15-year-old female, Liberty Middle School, Liberty, Missouri
"We have a club that contains people from just about every clique in our school. This club, The Breakfast Club, meets every other week and discusses ways to make our school a better place to be."

13-year-old female student, North Richland Middle School, North Richland Hills, Texas
"In the act of a crime, our students are supposed to report it to "crime stoppers." This is an organization that is put together by the students, and if anyone knows anything about a crime committed in school, or on the school grounds, they are supposed to report it to here. Everything is even kept confidential."

11-year-old female student, Liberty Middle School, Liberty, Missouri
"My school gives the "bully" a punishment, it depends how bad it is if they have done it before. Then if that doesn't work, you get a call home, and eventually the kid learns his lesson. We also put on skits and our teachers talk to us about bullying and how it affects people."

12-year-old female student, Abington Junior High School, Abington, Pennsylvania
"My school has had many different discussions about the horrible issue of violence. For one thing every year we have "Conflict Resolution Week", where we learn about un-violent ways to solve problems. Students are also taught the D.A.R.E program. Another program we have is Peer Mediation. This is where students with problems or issues can come and talk to other students, who have been trained, to help them resolve their problems."

13-year-old female student, Ladue Middle School, St. Louis, Missouri
"To prevent bullying and violence, my school set up a "Hallway Ticket" system. If there is any fighting or violence in the hallways you will get a ticket, and if you get three tickets, you have a detention."

12-year-old female student, Pikeville Elementary School, Pikeville, Kentucky
"P-practice positive attitudes; R-respect others; I-instill trust and honesty; D-do your best and aim high; E-exhibit responsibility (PRIDE). We also do second step, a program used to prevent violence in the school."
